On Saturday, June 30, 2018, newly-ordained Fr Peter Lee celebrated his first Mass as a Solemn Mass in the Presence of the Bishop in Cappa Magna. This liturgy includes some very interesting moments in our Roman Rite: The Bishop recites the prayers at the foot of the altar together with the celebrant, with the other ministers saying the responses; the Bishop reads all the proper antiphons (Introit, Gradual, Alleluia, Offertory, Communio) as well as the Gloria at the Throne from a second Missal; the Bishop blesses the incense at the Throne, which is then brought to the celebrant at the altar; the Bishop gives the blessings to the subdeacon and deacon after the Epistle and before the Gospel respectively; at the Offertory, the subdeacon turns toward the Throne and asks the Bishop to bless the water to be added to the chalice; the Bishop kneels at the center of the sanctuary for the consecrations, thus the subdeacon moves to the Epistle side; and, the Bishop gives the final blessing.
The Mass was a Votive Mass of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with commemorations of Sts Paul and Peter. Music included Asola’s setting of the Veni Creator, as well as his Missa secunda a 3 for the Ordinary, Byrd’s setting of Leviticus 21:6 and Palestrina’s setting of John 6:48-50 as Communion motets, Gregorian propers, the solemn Te Deum, and “Hail, Holy Queen Enthroned Above” as the recessional.
Thank you to Mr Joseph Hanneman for the photos, and congratulations to Fr Lee!
