  • Gloria in excelsis Deo! – Tridentine Mass Society of Madison

    And it came to pass, that in those days there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that the whole world should be enrolled. This enrolling was first made by Cyrinus, the governor of Syria. And all went to be enrolled, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem: because he was of the house and family of David, To be enrolled with Mary his espoused wife, who was with child.

    There will be a Sung Mass on Thursday, 5/25 at 6:00pm at St Mary’s Pine Bluff for Ascension Thursday. This important day in the liturgical year features the extinguishing of the Paschal Candle, as we commemorate Our Lord’s ascent into heaven 40 days after His Resurrection.

  • Diocese of Madison Mass Dispensation – Tridentine Mass Society of Madison

    If you have not already heard, please be aware that in response to the Coronavirus pandemic, His Excellency Bishop Donald Hying has issued a dispensation from Sunday and Holy Day Mass obligation for all Catholics in the Diocese of Madison until further notice.

    The situation continues to change rapidly, but at the time of this writing, Sunday TLMs are expected to continue as normal.

    If you are feeling ill, or are someone who is considered high-risk, please make use of the Bishop’s dispensation. It is not a sin to miss Mass at this time. You can follow along with Mass via livestream, locally from our Mass at St Mary’s Pine Bluff (https://stmarypinebluff.com/live-stream/), or from the YouTube page of the FSSP’s parish in Rome (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClAtfCutuTEauRbJIUCVlcA).   • Burying the Alleluia in 2018 – Tridentine Mass Society of Madison

    The pre-Lenten season of Septuagesima is rapidly approaching, with Septuagesima Sunday on January 28. As done in 2017, we will continue the restoration of an ancient tradition by burying the Alleluia before the TLM at St Mary’s in Pine Bluff.

    From last year’s post:

    In the Medieval churches of Western Europe, various customs arose around the final “Alleluia” which concludes First Vespers of Septuagesima. Especially in the French and Germanic lands, this often included writing the word “Alleluia” on a cloth or parchment, placing this in a catafalque, and burying it as at a funeral, to be uncovered after the joy of Easter Sunday. This act would be accompanied by hymns and canticles, most notably the hymn Alleluia, dulce carmen (O sweet song, alleluia), of French origin. The pre-Tridentine Germanic missals even included a Sequence bidding farewell to “Alleluia” on Septuagesima, Cantemus cuncti melodum nunc alleluia (Let us all now sing the melodious alleluia).

    The Alleluia will be buried beneath the church basement immediately before the 7:30 am Mass at St Mary’s on Septuagesima Sunday.

    This Wednesday, December 4, will be the first anniversary of the interment of His Excellency, Bishop Robert Morlino. To commemorate, we will have a Solemn Requiem Mass to pray for the repose of his soul. The Requiem Mass will be at St Mary’s Pine Bluff, at 6:30 PM.

  • All Saints and All Souls — Pontifical Requiem – Tridentine Mass Society of Madison

    In the coming week, we will both celebrate All Saints’ Day, and commemorate All Souls’ Day. In addition to the normal weekday TLM schedule, we will have additional Masses for these important days, including a Pontifical Requiem Mass at the Throne.

    All Saints Day

    First, on Wednesday, November 1, we honor the feast of All Saints — a holyday of obligation.

    We will have a Sung Mass (possibly Solemn) at St Mary’s Pine Bluff, beginning at 7:00 pm

    All Souls’ Day

    Then, on Thursday, November 2, we will pray for all the faithful departed on All Souls’ Day. Following a now several years old tradition, His Excellency Bishop Robert Morlino will celebrate a Pontifical Requiem Mass at the Throne with Absolution at the Catafalque for the intentions of the deceased bishops and priests of the Diocese of Madison.

    This Mass will be at Holy Name Heights (formerly the Bp O’Connor Center), beginning at 7:00 pm.

    Please join us for both of these important days in the Church’s calendar.

  • Special Chants: Christmas Kalenda and Epiphany Noveritis – Tridentine Mass Society of Madison

    Today is the Octave Day of the Nativity, and this Sunday, January 6, we will celebrate the great Feast of the Epiphany. The Roman liturgy offers some wonderful chants this time of year, which are a bit outside the norm of what most Catholic laity are used to hearing, even if they are familiar with the typical Gregorian chants of the Mass.

    Before our Solemn Midnight Mass of the Nativity at St Mary’s in Pine Bluff, we had the singing of the Christmas Kalenda. The Kalenda is not properly a part of the Mass — rather, it belongs to the Office of Prime — and normally it is nothing particularly noteworthy; it simply announces the date according to the ancient Roman calendar at the beginning of reading the day’s Martyrology entry.

    However, for the glorious Feast of Our Lord’s Nativity, the common Prophecy tone melody is replaced by a splendid chant, and simply stating the date does not suffice. Instead, Holy Church describes in poetic detail the place Christ holds in both salvation history and secular history:

    In the 5199th year from the creation of the world, when in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth; in the 2957th year from the flood, in the 2015th year from the birth of Abraham; in the 1510th year from the going forth of the people of Israel out of Egypt under Moses; in the 1032nd year from the anointing of David as King; in the 65th week according to the prophecy of Daniel; in the 194th Olympiad; in the 752nd from the foundation of the city of Rome; in the 42nd year of the reign of the Emperor Octavian Augustus, in the 6th age of the world, while the whole earth was at peace, Jesus Christ, Himself Eternal God and Son of the Eternal Father, being pleased to hallow the world by His most gracious coming, having been conceived of the Holy Ghost, and when nine months were passed after His conception, was born of the Virgin Mary at Bethlehem of Juda made Man. The Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the Flesh.

    While the Church prescribes this to be sung at Prime on Christmas Eve morning, since that Office is not often solemnly celebrated for the faithful to hear, we decided to also include it before Midnight Mass.

    The Noveritis in the Pontificale Romanum

    Similarly, the Feast of the Epiphany has a special chanted proclamation: the Noveritis. So-named because of the first word of the chant, the Noveritis is an announcement of the dates of important movable feasts for the year — Septuagesima Sunday, Ash Wednesday, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost, Corpus Christi, and the First Sunday of Advent.

    Whereas the Kalenda is not a part of the celebration of Mass, the Noveritis is to be sung after the Gospel on the Epiphany, at the ambo, or in the place where the Gospel is sung, by a deacon (or priest) vested in cope.

    We will be including the singing of the Noveritis in its proper place at the St Mary’s Pine Bluff TLM this Sunday, 6 January 2019.
